Reculver

Reculver is a small town on the south east coastline of England. There are two large towers that are the remains of a 12th century church.

The towers dominate the sky line and can be seen for miles around because the area is so flat. There were plans to demolish the towers in the 18th century but sailors complained because they used them for guidance and navigation and so they were left to remain.

The light in this area is so atmospheric the painter, Turner, would often paint there. I used to ride my bicycle past these towers many times and was always mesmerised by the different colours that the towers reflected.

This is my version that I tried to capture the changing light on the towers at Reculver.

“…the way light reflects off these shapes, softening the brilliance of their steely surfaces, is calculated to replicate the way sunlight and shadow played upon the surface towers, particularly at dawn and at dusk”
